Your Vimshottari dasha, mapped and explained

Your dasha periods are calculated from the Moon’s exact position at your birth. The Timing plan opens your full dasha timeline, shows the period changes coming in the next two years, and adds a written timing report every month.

Built from your Kundli, as a monthly plan.

In the Timing plan

  • Every mahadasha and its nine antardashas
  • Your current period, with dates
  • Period changes in the next two years
  • A written timing report each month
  • Dates in your birth time zone

What is Vimshottari dasha?

Vimshottari is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. It divides a 120-year cycle into nine major periods, or mahadashas, each ruled by one of the nine grahas.

Your cycle begins with the lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth. How far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra sets how much of the first period remained. Each mahadasha is then divided into nine antardashas, or sub-periods, in the same order.

  • Clear conventions. Dates in your birth time zone, using the Lahiri ayanamsa and a 365.25-day year.

Before you start

Your timing is built from your Kundli, so you need an approved Kundli reading with Tara first. Your first two Kundli readings are free.

Timing themes are for reflection. They describe traditional emphases, not events that will happen on particular dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my current mahadasha?

Your current mahadasha depends on the Moon’s nakshatra at birth and the time that has passed since. Request a Kundli reading with Tara: it includes your current dasha periods, and the Timing plan shows your full timeline.

What is the difference between mahadasha and antardasha?

A mahadasha is a major period that sets a long-term theme and lasts between 6 and 20 years. Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, shorter sub-periods that bring a narrower focus within it.

Why do dasha dates differ between websites?

Dasha dates depend on the exact Moon position, the ayanamsa and the length of year used. Tara uses the Lahiri ayanamsa and a 365.25-day year, and shows dates in your birth time zone.

Is the timing report a prediction?

No. It describes traditional timing themes for reflection, not events that will happen on particular dates.

How much does the Timing plan cost?

The Timing plan is a monthly subscription. The current price is shown in the app before you subscribe.
